Im thinking about getting a horse sometime next year but...?

Im thinking about getting a horse next year, the only problem is hay bales are extremely expensive. I was wondering can you completely feed a horse on pellets and other mash type foods instead of hay. If I get a horse he will be either in a stable at night and in a paddock during the day or in a paddock 24/7. Plz advice needed.
