My Christmas Cactus is way behind...?

My Christmas Cactus just started getting it's new "leaves" at the end of August and it is now the end of September and the new leaves are starting to grow new leaves too. I know they are supposed to get new leaves way back in March but mine is so late.But now is the time to start the cycle of light and dark with cool temperatures to get it to bloom for Christmas. But if mine is so way behind should I just leave it to grow or start the cycle to get it to bloom?
